What is Clean Eating?

by Seay Stanford That can be general or extreme. To some it may mean buying fresher foods. To me it means reducing CHEMICALS in my food. That means, reducing artificial colors, pesticides, hormones, all artificial sweeteners, genetic modifications, MSG, stimulants, artificial flavors, factory farmed meat and dairy, etc. The side effects of these chemicals slowly chip away at our health and body recovery. To you, clean eating may mean moving just from the boxed brown and tan food category to the fresh colorful food category. Ideally your goal is IMPROVEMENT, not PERFECTION :-) If you are not eating clean now, you will find that even with small changes, you will notice that you feel MUCH better! Also, the cleaner your food, the BETTER you feel and the easier it is to lose weight! Also, when eating clean, you are getting WAY more nutrients in your body. Nutrients that are used towards FUEL and workout recovery. Think back to when you were dieting and cutting calories and you were TIRED and CRAVING FOOD all the time. Yeah- that STINKS! I mean, who create a sustainable LIFESTYLE feeling like that? No WONDER we often give up and then binge eat. Tiredness and cravings are tell tale signs that your body is NUTRIENT DEFICIENT. The good news is, that by eating clean, especially with what I can teach you, you will be able to lower your calories and have MORE energy and less cravings. All that makes your weight loss efforts much easier to stick with. Doesn't that sound MUCH better?!

I often hear "Nutrition news and data is ALWAYS changing! What's healthy and safe one week is not the next". There is some truth to that. However, much of what we hear is MEDIA or MARKETING based. If you look closely enough at publications, you see its a paid article by the very company that promotes the product. I strive to base my knowledge on long term well designed data by third parties. I also may throw my own little personal opinion in here and there too. My beliefs are that there should be no food group elimination. Low Fat, Low carb, high protein diets are FADS. What you want are the right KINDS. There are three macronutrients for a reason and they all serve a purpose to our overall health. The key is learning which ones are BETTER options. Personally, what I believe should be eliminated are not food groups, but CHEMICALS. Chemicals and compounds that didn't exist in our food supply 100 years ago. In general, I personally believe that most diseases, specifically cancer, is 20% genetic, 80% environmental. I always hear people ask, "Why haven't we found a cure for cancer?!" And I ask, "Why aren't we all reducing exposure to the very factors in our environment that we know can cause it?" Some of the reason is that we are uninformed or mislead by labels. We TRUST packaging and that our food system has our BEST health in mind. I can tell you why the FDA allows these chemicals in the American Food system. I can tell you why some of the "food pyramid" data constantly changes from a political standpoint. I can tell you why even though someone LOOKS thin and fit, they can be FAR from healthy on the inside. At the end of the day, I feel being a purest is too extreme for me, personally. I will eat out at restaurants when I desire. But while at home, I make the best choices possible that I do have control over. I believe that balance is what creates a sustainable lifestyle. The PURPOSE of learning and knowledge is to teach you and not scare you. :-) Its actually pretty empowering when you know "better" and know you aren't being duped into thinking you feeding your family healthy foods. My goal is for you to learn simple fundamentals and start the process of "phasing out" certain foods and understanding labels. Remember, living a clean-eating lifestyle doesn't have to be an overhaul, its a SHIFT. If you think healthy food tastes "boring" its because you've conditioned your taste buds to what you THINK food tastes like. Clean eating, at what ever part of the spectrum you are on, will not only taste great, but will improve your health, energy, and focus. I promise you will feel amazing!
