Hence, a growing body of evidence proves fiber-rich diet as effective additive to weight management. The well-known dietary food has shown significant results in fighting against risk of diabetes, weight loss and other chronic illnesses. Significantly, cancer-related diseases such as breast cancer can be prevented when diet high in fiber is adopted in early adulthood. Studies have flourished in exploring the benefits fiber in women, in fact, role of nutrition in early life suggests that a fiber-rich diet can be potentially modifiable risk factors in premenopausal breast cancer. It’s been alarming in the fast few years on how breast cancer cases have increased in number. Researchers believed that the main culprit is from the diet itself. According to Walter Willett, a senior author and Fredrick John Stare Professor of Epidemiology and Nutrition at Harvard Chan School, we now have evidence that what we feed out children during his period of life is also an important factor in future cancer risk. "From many other studies we know that breast tissue is particularly influenced by carcinogens and anti-carcinogens during childhood and adolescence”, said by Willett. That is why an investigation was led by Maryam Farvid, a lead researcher and a visiting scientist at Harvard Chan School. She also quoted that influence of fiber on cancer risk may be time-sensitive and has a great impact during adolescence where breast cancer risk factors are significantly important. According to researchers of Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, a survey participated by 90, 534 women in 1991 at the ages of 27 and 44 were asked to filled out the initial questionnaire and were asked to respond every four years to fill out similar questionnaires gauging food intake. Dietary intake was obtained from participants via validated semi-quantitative FFQ with approximately 130 items about dietary intake and alcohol consumption during past years. Consequently, after sever (7) years, the participants were asked to complete another set of questions concerning their diet during high school. The said investigations under Nurses' Health Study II look into the factors that influence women's health. Results have shown that a diet plenty of fiber during adolescence significantly lowers the overall breast cancer risk by 16 percent and lower risk before menopause by 24 percent. It is believed that sex steroid hormone contributes to breast cancer development and a fiber-rich diet has been hypothesized to help lower the breast cancer development by inhibiting reabsorption of estrogen. Moreover, research teams believed that diet high in fiber lowers estrogen level in the blood, which is significantly reduce circulating levels. Finally, on the same study, diet mentioned helps control prostate cancer progression in men. This clinical potential should be diagnosed at early stage to prevent cancer cells from creating new blood vessels. The mentioned study provide anchor to the hypothesis of the consumption of fiber-rich diet to the reduction of risk of breast cancer development.
